Douglas H. Ingram, M.D.
Dr. Ingram is a graduate of Columbia College in New York City and of New York University School of Medicine. Upon completion of his medical training, he remained in New York and entered a medical internship, followed by a psychiatric residency at St. Vincent's Hospital. During this period, he provided emergency psychiatric services for the New York University Student Health Service and served as a staff psychiatrist at the Manhattan Bowery Project. After residency, he was employed by the Alcoholism Treatment Program of Beth Israel Hospital in New York and was soon appointed Director and Supervising Psychiatrist of its Out-Patient Department. He entered private practice on a full-time basis and became Board Certified in Psychiatry and Neurology. Additionally, he was certified in Psychoanalysis by the American Institute for Psychoanalysis, currently a participating institute of the American Psychoanalytic Association where he is a member.
Dr. Ingram's interest in addictive disorders led to his appointment as Physician-In-Charge of the Obesity Program of the Karen Horney Clinic. Additionally, he worked with developmentally disabled young adults at the same facility. For several years, he served as Medical Director and Chairman of the Medical Board of the Karen Horney Clinic.
A teacher and lecturer throughout his professional career, Dr. Ingram has been on the faculties of several teaching facilities and hospitals, most notably 1) the American Institute for Psychoanalysis, 2) The Psychoanalytic Institute of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, New York Medical College, and 3) Metropolitan Hospital.
He has served as instructor of courses that include the following: Senior Continuous Case Seminar, Theory of Neurosis, Introduction to Dreams, The Psychoanalytic Process, The Mental Disorders, Advanced Readings Seminar, Contemporary Issues in Horney Psychoanalytic Theory and Practice, Introduction to Problems in Poststructuralist Psychoanalysis, The Poetics of Psychoanalysis, Psychodynamic Formulation and Case Presentation, Seminar on Microanalytic Technique, Lectures on Karen Horney, and the Culturalist Perspective in Psychoanalysis.
Soon after his certification as a Psychoanalyst, Dr. Ingram was appointed Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst at the American Institute for Psychoanalysis where he has also served on the Faculty Council and Board of Trustees. He was elected Dean of the American Institute for a two-year term after which he was elected to Distinguished Membership. At The Psychoanalytic Institute of New York Medical College, he has served on several committees and was appointed to the Senior Faculty, where he is a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst. He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at the College.
He served as the Editor of the American Journal of Psychoanalysis and subsequently as Editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Psychiatry. He is the author of over 50 scholarly papers published in peer-reviewed journals.
